What is Mums + Bubs Yoga?

Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful baby!

For mum, our course has been specifically designed to support you in your postnatal months by helping your body regain strength and tone in a safe and effective way. Yoga relaxes the nervous system and brings balance to the endocrine system (hormonal balance).  We provide a safe place with other mums to honour your emotions and the beautiful (but sometimes challenging!) journey of motherhood.

The emphasis is on strengthening the pelvic floor, the abdomen, legs and back as well as on opening and relaxing tensions in the shoulders, neck and arms. The yoga taught in these classes is gentle and slow, giving you time to integrate the experiences of your body after birth.

For your baby, it’s a nurturing time to be involved in gentle stretching, massage and interactive play. Together you can create a happy, fun, safe balanced practice that you can also enjoy at home.

What do the babies do?

Relax! The classes include special activities to bond with your baby and connect with other mothers. During the sessions you will be offered the choice to involve your baby in the yoga postures or have him or her near to you. Please bring your little one’s favourite blanket or pillow to lay on. We kindly ask you to bring a mat or blanket and wipes to change your baby; Yoga West does not provide this.

Since these classes are baby centred you are welcome to attend to your baby's needs either by feeding, changing, holding or generally reassuring them in your presence at anytime. With the support of others, you will be able to develop a balance between doing yoga for yourself and meeting the needs of your baby.

What are the benefits?

  • More confidence in your ability to handle difficult and confronting situations

  • Baby postural development and energy exploration

  • An increase in abdominal and pelvic floor stability thereby reducing back pain

  • Release of tension through the neck and shoulders reducing pain with breastfeeding

When can I start and how long can I continue?

You can begin to practice gentle breathing and movement exercises from four weeks after your birth. It is very important that you attend when you feel physically capable. The classes are suitable for babies four weeks old to active crawling (this is completely negotiable!).
